Router Setup: Connect to Wi-Fi and Get Online
Connect your router to an internet source, configure the Wi-Fi your devices use, and confirm internet access.
Before you start
Have the router administrator login, the Wi-Fi name and password for your devices, and the details for your internet source. Power on the router.
Set up your router
Connect to the router
Join the Wi-Fi network on the router label or connect a computer to a LAN port. Open the router address from its label or quick-start card. If you don't have it, find the Router or Default Gateway address in your device's network settings.
Sign in with the administrator details supplied with the router or by your installer.
Connect an internet source
Open the router's Internet or WAN settings and choose a supported connection:
- Ethernet: connect the upstream modem or router's LAN port to this router's WAN / Internet port. Use Automatic / DHCP unless your provider gave different settings.
- Wi-Fi: if supported, choose Wi-Fi WAN, Wireless WAN, Client, or Repeater. Scan for the network, select it, and enter its password.
- Cellular: install and activate a compatible SIM, then follow the router's instructions for your carrier and plan.
Save the connection. If the upstream network requires a sign-in page, connect a device to your router and complete the sign-in.
Set up Wi-Fi for your devices
Open Wireless or Wi-Fi settings for your router's local network. Keep the supplied name and password or set your own. Use WPA2 or WPA3 security when available.
Some routers show separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks. Choose the band your devices support. Reconnect them if the router restarts Wi-Fi.
Wi-Fi WAN brings internet into the router; the router's Wi-Fi connects your devices.
Check internet access
Connect a phone or computer to your router's Wi-Fi and open a website. In the router status page, confirm the WAN / Internet connection is online and has an address.
If your router supports failover, set its preferred and backup internet sources. Confirm the backup is online before testing. Failover and health-check options vary by router.
Troubleshooting
I can't open the router settings.
Connect to the router by Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Open its label's management address or use your device's Router / Default Gateway address.
Wi-Fi is connected, but there is no internet.
Check the upstream modem, access point, or cellular service. Recheck cables or passwords and complete any sign-in page required by the upstream network.
I can't find Wi-Fi WAN or the menus don't match.
Not all routers support Wi-Fi WAN, and menu names differ. Check the router's manual or ask the manufacturer or installer for the matching setup instructions.
